Product: United – 2015 KL40 Complete Bikes

I got an email the other day from a guy asking for some suggestions as to what would be a good complete bike to buy for someone looking to get into riding trails. Seeing as the complete bike market is not one I keep up with at all, I had to sit down and take some time to look at what was out there before I could get back to him. I can’t say that I was all too surprised to find that the majority of the completes out there had geometry more geared towards riding street. Even BF’s signature Fit complete had a 75 degree head tube and a backend so short that exhaling might cause you to loop out. It wasn’t until I came across United‘s KL40 line of completes that I felt I had found something that I would be comfortable recommending. Unlike the other completes out there, the KL40s were designed from the ground up with trails in mind. They better damn well be with Kye and Leo Forte’s name on them! With models in three different price points, they have everyone covered from the beginner just getting into riding trails, all the way to the older guy getting back into it after a hiatus. Hit the jump button for a closer look!

KL40

MSRP $399.99

The KL40 is the entry level model in the line. With its 20.4″ top tube, it’s more geared towards the smaller beginner rider. United was able to keep the cost low by using 1020 hi-tensile steel for the frame tubes, fork legs, and handlebars. Parts like their tried and true Supreme 410 chain, Valentino pedals, Supreme sealed rear cassette hub, and aftermarket Direct and Indirect tires offer the performance and reliability you expect of more expensive completes. Where was this when I was just a little grom starting out!? Sealed bearing headsets and bottom brackets were definitely nowhere to be found on completes back then.

KL40 Expert

MSRP $549.99

As the mid-level bike in the KL40 line, the KL40 Expert steps things up with a 100% chromoly frame, fork and bars. The frame features a longer 21″ top tube, that combined with the larger bars makes it perfect for older and/or taller riders. The parts spec also gets a significant bump up from the entry level KL40 with a United tripod seat and post, Supreme front hub and rear cassette hub, both with female axles, and Tektro brakes. The KL40 Expert is a great bike for established riders looking to upgrade from an entry level complete, but who don’t have the coin to spend on a full pro-caliber ride. Did I mention that it has a very trails friendly 74.25° head tube angle and 13.85″ (centered) rear end?

KL40 Pro

MSRP $739.99

Finally that brings us to the KL40 Pro. Usually you’re talking about an aftermarket frame when you start listing off features like 100% Japanese chromoly tubes, removable brake mounts and guides, bullet tipped stays, and integrated chain tensions, but in this case we are talking about a complete bike. Add to that a CNC machined 53mm top load stem, 100% chromoly forks with a 1-piece CNC machined steer tube and tapered legs, a CNC’d 6061 aluminum sprocket, and heat treated 100% chromoly bars with dual radius bends, and you have a bike ready to slay the woods right out of the box. It shares the same trails friendly 74.25° head tube angle and 13.85″ (centered) rear end that’s found on the KL40 Expert, but bumps up the standover height to 8.9″. I really have to applaud United for not only making a complete bike spec’d this well, but for also making one that is truly tailored for riding trails. Seriously, I would swoop one of these up in a second if my bike ever got stolen and I was short on money!
